Prestressed steel wire is a type of steel wire made from carbon steel wire and used in prestressed concrete structures or prestressed steel structures.
Cold-drawn prestressed steel wire is made from high-quality high-carbon steel wire rod after surface treatment. The carbon content of the steel is selected in the range of 0.6-0.9%. Before cold drawing, it undergoes pickling, phosphating, or other forms of surface treatment. After cold drawing, the cross-sectional area is generally reduced by 50-85%, and the strength is improved through the principle of cold work hardening.
Cold-drawn prestressed steel wire, after further stabilization, becomes low-relaxation prestressed steel wire, acquiring low-relaxation characteristics and significantly improving yield strength, elongation, and straightness. If galvanized, it becomes galvanized prestressed steel wire; galvanized wire that has undergone stabilization is called low-relaxation galvanized prestressed steel wire. The wire is generally delivered in coils; when used in railway sleepers, it can be cut to length and bundled as needed.
The high strength of this material is mainly manifested in the axial direction, with significantly lower radial strength. When heated to 400 degrees Celsius or higher, relaxation and strength properties will be significantly impaired. When cold-drawn prestressed steel wire is used in pipelines, its resistance to stress corrosion should be carefully checked. When using galvanized steel wire, its corrosion resistance should not be completely relied upon; the entire cable system should have other protective measures.
Cold-drawn prestressed steel wire is generally used in pipelines, especially those manufactured using the PCCP process. Low-relaxation prestressed steel wire is widely used in railway sleepers and prestressed concrete poles, and less frequently in building components; it is no longer used in precast beams. Low-relaxation galvanized prestressed steel wire is commonly used in the cables of cable-stayed bridges, tie rods of steel pipe arch bridges, and in the fabrication of prestressed cables for long-span structures. Unstabilized galvanized steel wire is generally used in the cables of suspension bridges.
